-changing performance by mitt romney in last night's debate, republican governor of new jersey, governor chris christie. chris, you happen to be right. >> good morning, mika. good morning, joe. >> what happened, chris? what do you got a crystal ball? chris christie's krystal ball spelled with a "kar"? >> i don't think anybody else was paying attention. every time mitt romney had his back against the wall and they had a debate, he came out and had a game-changing debate. ask rick perry, ask newt gingrich. every time he's done it. and on sunday, i just came out and said exactly what i believed, which was i've seen this guy do this before. and i think he's going to do it again. and he did last night. >> what happened to the president? everybody's stunned. again, his supporters, i think, and it's so strange how the shoe is suddenly on the other foot. we republicans have been so frustrated that mitt romney's not been able to press our case on why the past four years haven't worked. last night you heard democrats so frustrated about the fact that the president couldn't press his case. i mean, why do you thin

in ohio, one day ahead of the first presidential debate in denver. that's where mitt romney was last night where he made his last scheduled public appearance before tomorrow night's face-off. the republican candidate received the endorsement of a local legend, hall of fame quarterback john elway. he introduced romney to a crowd of 5,000 supporters. >> i get the opportunity to introduce to you the next president of the united states, governor mitt romney! >> last night romney who spent long hours preparing for tomorrow's debate said the stakes are greater than simply crowning a winner of the debate. >> people want to know who's going to win? who's going to score the punches and who's going to make the biggest difference and the arguments they make, and there's going to be all the scoring of winning and losing. you know, in my view, it's not so much winning and losing or even the people themselves, the president and myself. it's about something bigger than that. these debates are an opportunity for each of us to describe the pathway forward for america that we would choose. >> the president

best handle health care. on wednesday night it might be risky for romney not to take risks, but what can he do? he might add to his policies by embracing, say, breaking up the largest banks, the sound policy that would subvert the -- but not good venues for explaining anything, actually. but especially not new initiatives. and october is a time for summations to the jury, not new submissions of evidence. you agree? >> i agree with that completely. i think the idea of romney going out there and saying let's break up the big banks, i think it would not help him. i think his -- apart from what howard and john have said, i think his challenge is he's got to deal with this 47% problem. he's got to somehow walk back from that and convince people he actually cares about all of america. that's his job as well as humanizing himself. i think the moderator and president obama are going to be desperately trying to get this guy to be specific about what it is he wants to do. not only does he change positions, but right now, he won't say what he wants to do about tax loopholes, and medicare, and i

or funny, it's not who you are, just be mitt romney, he'll have a good night. >> i think he'll have a good night. i'll tell you this also, mark mckinnon. we're going to hear about the 47% from barack obama tonight. he'll bring that up. i also think mitt romney will bring this up in the debate. something that was spoken yesterday in charlotte, north carolina, by our dear friend joe biden. roll it. >> the romney/ryan tax plan will raise taxes on middle-class families with a child, one or more children, by an additional $2,000 a year. how -- all kidding aside, with all the boos, look, guys, this is deadly earnest, man. this is deadly earnest! how they can justify, how they can justify raising taxes on the middle class that's been buried the last four years, how in lord's name can they justify? >> god bless him. >> mark mckinnon -- i love him. mike, we love him. we love him! has anybody not told him, they've been in the white house for the past four years? buried? the middle class has been buried over the past four years. >> joe, i am being deadly earnest now, man. deadly earnest. okay? on how

debate between barak obama and mitt romney is tomorrow night and the campaigns are doing whatever they can to get ready. actually i heard that the obama campaign is a little worried 'cause during his flight to nevada on sunday, the president apparently watched four hours of football instead of studying. [ laughter ] although it did mark the first time all year obama has seen something get passed. [ laughter ] >> steve: funny. >> brian: i did not hear that. is that the premise of that joke true? that he watched four hours of football? >> martha: you can also go back to the notion that it shouldn't take that much studying to get ready for this. >> steve: you should know. >> martha: they've been working on these issues, they've been campaigning on these issues across the country for months and months and months. does it really take that much studying to get ready for this? >> brian: is it wrong to disagree with martha? >> martha: absolutely. ask hemmer. >> brian: i think it's totally different when someone is coming at you and saying you're wrong about this and defending something yo

romney would do on wednesday night. that would tighten it in ohio. it would tighten it in north carolina. probably go ahead in north carolina. it would tie it in iowa, probably tie it up in iowa. that's why you can't buy your way out of this mess the romney campaign is in right now, but you can outdebate them. >> more than anything else what seemed to have happened in august was democrats got enthused by their convention more than republicans did. the latest polling shows the enthusiasm gap coming back towards republicans. a git debate could juice that nationally among republicans. >> the people going out to vote is still pretty close. >> they need to turn the page. >> the polls in these swing states, and if i dismissed every other poll but local polls, fox news polls and what the romney people are saying their polls are showing, mitt romney's in trouble. again, if you just look at the locals polls, the fox news polls and the polls that the romney team has internally, mitt romney's in trouble right now. that can all change on wednesday night. >>> coming up, senator john mccain joins us o
